What a crazy world we live in. What an uncertain time to be a leader. Here is why leadership today is different. In the same week once perennial leader BlackBerry announced they were facing $1 billion loss and will slash 4,500 jobs Grand Theft Auto Five sold over $1 billion in three days. Not to mention in the same week Apple fans camped out waiting again for the new iPhone. If there is one thing different about leading in these crazy times it is this. Embrace unpredictability as the norm. Every competitive advantage is assailable. Nothing is sustainable.
Of course, academicians, gurus and executives should have known this. In these wildly complex times commoditization is both the threat and opportunity for every leader, employee and organization.
You are going to have to hack into every aspect of your organization to make it faster and leaner. In other words, you are going to have to think like a cock roach not a dinosaur. In a word, cock roaches survive because they adapt. Another word for “adapt” is avoiding commoditization which is certainly something Lehman Brothers, Blackberry did not. In fact, commoditization is the bogey man for Microsoft and Intel. Not just leadership “can we all just get along?”
