You Can Learn Something From Michael Sam’s Authentic Leadership

There are so many people who say one thing and do another. So many who seldom if ever walk the talk.

There are far too many of us of any race, gender etc who quietly denigrate others. Remarkable isn’t it how easy it is to justify prejudices when we think we have none?

Michael Sam’s draft into the NFL this past weekend became a center of discussion with friends and clients today. In fact, draft in the last round is frankly appalling considering his abilities as a person and football player. When an HR executive denounced Mr. Sam while earlier assuaging the effective implementation of diversity I became concerned.

When I returned home I thought about how I was disenfranchised and a Mormon for being black. Even more so for marrying a white woman.  My character was ultimately insignificant beyond the veneers of pseudo tolerant leaders. However, I am compelled to realize, nay, admit my own unconscious prejudices over the years toward people who did not meet what I presumed to be “right.”

Think about what we tolerate from actors, musicians, Miley Cyrus, singers, religious leaders and business executives. Yes even in our own lives.
