What Ray Rice Can Teach Us About Leadership

How strange. In the past 40 years we have had more meetings, more conference, more business books than all the years past. Yet, nothing changes. I mean nothing.

For example in the Ray Rice case of abuse those who knew only found it distasteful when they feared a lost in revenue.  Imagine what this symbolizes. The NFL has long had a problem of abuse to women.

So has business.

Boys will be boys. A prominent manufacturing company asked for my advice on diversity and leadership. They desired to hire x number of immigrant workers illegally during the summer as they had been doing over the years. City officials were well aware. The firms HR executive along with the Chamber of Commerce sought my advice for some reason because they had made their decision.

If it’s not broke why fix it? I asked what example would this subterfuge of the law send to their employees. The executives shrugged it off ignoring the real bottom-line for immediacy. Watch this video by Keith Olbermann. This is as much about the failures of leadership, management and employee engagement as any you will see.

Let’s be honest. No one comes away with implementable ideas from conferences. Not even when speakers attempt to train.

Do you understand why?

Look at the video again. Real change comes from the inside out. One can’t be a little bit pregnant or a little bit ethical. How Ray Rice situation, he hasn’t been the only one over the years, was handled, is demonstrative of how these men feel honestly about women.
